TODAY’S SPECIAL: Acts 28:1-10 TO CHEW ON: "His father was sick in bed, suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul went in to see him and, after prayer, placed his hands on him and healed him. When this had happened, the rest of the sick on the island came and were cured." (Acts 28:8,9) Paul had just come through a two-week storm and a hair-raising shipwreck. The sailors and passengers had landed on the Island of Malta. You’d think he would be asking for a holiday. But not Paul! "Paul sails for Rome" - Artist unknown (after Gustave Dore) First he helped collect firewood. When a viper (a poisonous reptile) fastened itself to his hand, the superstitious islanders thought this was a sign Paul was a murderer. They watched closely to see him fall over dead. When Paul didn’t die they thought he was a god....

All-seeing Eyes

TODAY’S SPECIAL: Psalm 139:1-16 TO CHEW ON: "You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways." Psalm 139:2,3 David couldn’t sleep in his own bed any more, or eat at his own table, or be close to the people he loved. That would make it too easy for Saul to find and kill. Instead, he had to run away. He ran from city to city. But as soon as someone recognized him he had to leave because it was no longer safe. Finally David found a good place to hide in some caves. Saul couldn’t find him there. David’s own family didn’t know where he was. But Someone did. God never lost sight of David all the time he was hiding. In Psalm 139 David writes about God’s all-seeing eyes. Pick out every statement below, that tell where God sees us and what He knows about us. (Psalm 139:1-16) 1. God sees where we sit in school.2. God sees us when we get up in the morning.3. God knows what we will say this evening. 4. God sees us when we’re in a space...

A Solid House

TODAY’S SPECIAL: Luke 6:46-49 TO CHEW ON: "As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock." Luke 6:47-48a Which part of a house is built first: - the walls?- the roof?- the rooms?- the front porch?- the foundation?- the basement? You probably know that the foundation of a house is the very first thing a builder makes. He usually starts building that foundation by digging a hole. If he can dig down to bedrock and fasten the house’s foundation onto rock, the house will be almost immovable. But if a house’s foundation rests on earth or sand, it can be swept away by floods, toppled by earthquakes and smashed by storms. One day Jesus told a story of one man who built his house on a rock. Another man built his house on sand. When the storm came, which house stayed standing? "The house upon the rock and the house upon the sand" by William James Webb Jesus explained the story. He said those houses on their different foundations are like our lives. When...

A New Start

TODAY’S SPECIAL: Ezra 9:5-15 TO CHEW ON: "Then, at the evening sacrifice, I rose from my self-abasement, with my tunic and cloak torn, and fell on my knees with my hands spread out to the Lord my God and prayed: 'I am too ashamed and disgraced, my God, to lift up my face to you, because our sins are higher than our heads and our guilt has reached to the heavens.' " Ezra 9:5,6Ezra and the people were overjoyed when they reached Jerusalem. There were cheers, tears of joy and hugs as old friends met again and families got re-acquainted. But it took only one meeting with the leaders for Ezra to find out that things here were far from perfect. “The men have again begun to marry idol-worshiping women,” the leaders told him. “Even the priests and Levites are doing this.” Ezra was shocked, terribly disappointed, and afraid. He tore his clothes, pulled hair from his head and beard, then sat on the ground in silence. Why hadn’t the people learned their lesson? Would God now need to punish them again? Or would He give up on them and wipe them out altogether? Soon others who were also loyal to God joined him. They...

Human Towers

TODAY'S SPECIAL: Read Genesis 11:1-9 TO CHEW ON: "Then they said, 'Come let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.'” Genesis 11:4 God was displeased with the people’s plan to build a tower. It wasn’t so much the building which displeased Him, but the attitude it showed. This tower plan showed pride. It was as if these people were saying, “Making this tower will prove we humans can do anything we are determined to do.” God stopped the project. Which method did He use?1. Sent an earthquake2. Sent a plague of sickness3. Confused the languages so people could no longer understand each other.4. Caused the workers to go on strike. In this way God reminded people of their human limits. We humans may be creative and ambitious and energetic and determined. But this story reminds us that God is greater than any human scheme or idea. If something is against His plan, He can shut it down in an instant. PRAYER: Dear God, I want to honor and serve You with my life—not human pride and ambition. Amen SECOND...

Everyday Life

TODAY'S SPECIAL: Read Genesis 8:15-22 Noah and his family leave the ark - Artist unknown TO CHEW ON: "As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease." (Genesis 8:22) The flood was over. At last the animals and people could leave the ark! Here they came, tumbling out of the doorway, taking deep breaths of fresh air, skipping, jumping, running, then galloping. They loved the feel of the sun on their backs and the breeze on legs and faces. Best of all, God had told them there would be no more floods. Now life could get back to normal. Though we’ll never have to go through a worldwide flood like Noah and his family did, we also live through things which disturb our everyday routine. These can be as frightening as having our house burn down or as fun as going on a vacation. But whether good or bad, there comes a time when we’re ready to get back to ordinary everyday life Before you complain that that’s too boring, think of all the variety God has built into the repeats of nature. Match the opposites of everyday living on the lists below:...
